Lone Gull 10K Race Report
2018 CRC Race Series #12
September 30, 2018
Weather: Sunny and 60F
Last weekend CRC traveled to Gloucester for the 10k competition of the USATF
Grand Prix. The picturesque course resembled a travel brochure for the New England coast. While rolling hills had us thinking, “only 58 feet above sea level?” at the halfway point, the big downhill at mile five (and Jason Stewart’s cheering) helped us finish strong. The result was many PRs and big improvement in team scoring compared to last year!
Featuring a couple ladies racing for CRC for the first time (Kristen Glennie and Velina Chavarro) the women finished 9th out of 21 teams. Kristen, Cassie Short, Brittany Saia, Karyn Benson, and Steph Habura (PR) combined for a time of 3:41:21 — an improvement over CRC’s time from last year by 23 minutes! Other notable performances on the women’s side include Chloe Andersen’s PR which she had tried to break multiple time since moving from St. Louis, and Sarah Soltau’s PR (with the encouragement of her pacer, Kun Song) the day after a 15 mile long run.
With a combined time of 3:04:25, the CRC men ran about 19 minutes faster than last year. PRs from the top three finishers: Kyle Coffee, Wesley Mather, Brian Boudreau, and solid performances from Tyler Silverman and Greg Saia earned CRC a 15th place finish (out of 25 teams). However, the big improvements extended beyond CRC’s top five: Tom Salvon’s strong finish resulted in a new PR, and Hans Gould lowered his Lone Gull time last year by seven minutes.
Other notable efforts include:
* Brittany and Greg Saia followed up their first evening with an overnight babysitter with an early morning 10k.
* Peter Barzdines ran his longest road race (that wasn’t a hike up Mt. Washington) in a couple years.
* Nursing an Achilles injury Brendan Peltier started out slowly, but yelled out words of encouragement as he passed over half of the CRC field.
* After not appearing in the results, Wes had the officials check a redundant timing system to confirm that he had actually run the race.
Congrats to all who raced and good luck in the upcoming fall races!
