Millennium Mile
New Hampshire
12/30/07
Well, today running legends and running gods were made as three CRC members made the trip up to Londonderry NH to take part in the Millennium Mile. The weather was perfect, the course was fast and these three CRC members rocked the granite state. This one mile road race attracts a lot of top talent and today there was no shortage of talent. After traveling from Cambridge in a sweet ride chauffeured by Andrew Goldthorp, Jenn Campbell, Justin Verdirame and myself went out for a warmup run to get ready for the mile ahead of us. After our warm-ups we ran into fellow CRC members who made the trip up to cheer us on. A very big special thanks to Suma, Katie O, Eileen, Daimian and Steve Kohen for coming up to cheer us on.
The field of runners topped over 600 this year so we knew we were in for an interesting race as there were no wave starts for the runners. It was every person for themselves as the gun went off. Jenn toed the line while Justin and I played it cool and hung back a bit behind the starting line to give her some breathing room. The gun went off and chaos broke out as you had people sprinting all out who would soon drop off at the quarter mile marker. Within a blink of an eye we were already at the half mile marker and it was a strange feeling to think we only had a half mile to go. At about the three quarter mile marker stood the CRC cheering crew with their hand clapper tool and cowbell to give us that extra push. Before we knew it, the race was over and I was very happy until that wonderful burning sensation in my lungs started to kick in, come to find out I wasn’t the only poor sole with the same feeling.
So here it is, Jenn turned in an amazing time while taking second place for the women and twenty first place overall in the race. Justin and I learned a hard lesson that you don’t race a mile race like you would a marathon. We both turned in times we were pleased with myself finishing forty-eighth and Justin finishing sixtieth overall. Well, when all is said and done Jenn, Justin and myself plan on making this an annual tradition as it is a great race and a lot of fun. We hope to see more CRC members out there next year.
