Stowe 8 Miler (07/18/2010)

Stowe 8 Miler
Stowe, VT
July 18, 2010

On Sunday July 18th, 8 CRCers participated in the latest USATF New England Grand Prix race - the 29th Annual Stowe (VT) 8 Miler.

The group headed north to Vermont on Saturday afternoon after the long run, with a few of us stopping en route to swim at a state park off of Rt. 89 in New Hampshire. After arriving in Vermont and playing a vicious game of Frisbee (which ended with Hank missing a small chunk of his nose) and a tasty pre-race dinner in the smallest state capital in the U.S., Team CRC retired to the Barre Days Inn.

Early the next morning, we headed up the road to Stowe, where all of the USATF New England clubs had assembled for the race. After warming up, we lined up in an open field for a frantic cross country-style start. From there, the 8-mile loop course featured rolling hills along scenic (and sunny) country roads, and finished with a long uphill into Stowe center. Upon finishing, racers were treated to ice cold PBR and creamy Vermont ice cream.

After indulging in these post-race treats, the men's and women's teams did a group cool-down on some beautiful mowed grass running paths in the fields around downtown Stowe. From there, it was off to a famous local cider doughnut bakery for some more well-deserved calories (wait, the race was only 8 miles?) before heading back to Cambridge.

Both the men's and women's teams put in good performances on Sunday. Though the men raced without some of their usual GP scorers, they finished a respectable 9th in the team standings. The ladies - proving yet again that they are smarter, better-looking, and better runners than the CRC men - finished 5th out of 14 teams, less than a minute out of 4th place in a very competitive field.

A big, big thank you goes out to three CRCers who helped the men form a team of 5 runners (the minimum required to score a men's team in a GP race): new member Jay Roxe, who ran well despite recently returning to consistent training; Andrew, who gutted it out on 2 bad hamstrings in order to help the team score 5; and Joltin' Joe Shapiro, who shocked everyone by showing up at the hotel unannounced on Saturday night in his Blues Brothers shades.

Congratulations to Becky, Amanda, and Heather for kicking butt and taking names all morning. And congratulations to "friend-of-CRC" Hank for admirable participation in the CRC carpool, warm-up, and cool-down.

Finally, thanks to Meredith, Rachel, and Heather's Mom for cheering the runners on.

Mark your calendars for the next installment in the USATF New England Grand Prix series: the Bridge of Flowers 10k on Saturday, August 14th!
