Club Challenge Cup Marathon Relay

The colors of Blue and Yellow waged an epic battle on the morning of June 12.

At 8am, 26.2 CRC runners on around the battlefield to face six opposing teams in the "Club Challenge Cup Marathon Relay". After the starting gun, each CRC runner one-by-one began running miles. The CRC Blue held the lead over Sommerville's yellow "A" team for over 18 miles. By mile 24, we were only 400 meters behind.

As we reached mile 25, the crowd went wild, Chad Carr dropped a 29-second 200 meters, and Chad eventually crossed the finish line with the day's fastest mile (4:40). Our final time (about 2:23:26) beat CRC's one-person marathon record by thirteen minutes.

However, the Somerville A squad produced a blockbuster finish with several sub-5 miles, and won by exactly 60 seconds. Their 2:22:26 finish set an event record, and CRC took home a massive silver trophy. One Million documentary photos are available at http://jimrhoades.com/10/marathonrelay/

CRC produced an unprecedented performance. Almost all 26 milers ran faster than predicted and several ran with injury. CRC had the fastest two overall women's legs (Becky Hutchinson and Amanda Brewster) and the fastest two men's legs (Chad Carr and Paul Wagner). The race included complimentary pizza during the awards ceremony, a post-run visit to The Pub, and a post-run rematch over the foosball table. (The CRC "A" foosball squad beat Somerville while the CRC "B" foosball squad did not).
