They say a picture is worth a thousand words. But this picture requires at least a few. What we see part of here is the ultimate act of self-sacrifice for a racer. Jay Salony is extending a hand to a fallen runner by the side of the street about 150 yards from the finish line yesterday. This poor dude had gone all wobbly-legged and collapsed, but, through frothing lips, kept shouting that he absolutely had to ....... and of course totally could ..... get to the finish. So Jay and Meredith abandoned their own blistering pursuits just short of glory and not only helped him to his feet but with the assistance of another runner actually escorted him slowly, step-by-step, to and across the line. I'm told that after collapsing again beside the finish the runner made a miraculous recovery when he became aware that an ambulance was on its way. Great work guys. You are definitely in the lead for the 2009 CRC Acts of Compassion on the Road Award. But next time you do this try to have some CRC gear on. That would have been the icing on the cake!
We had a fine turnout of club runners. There was also a sizeable club cheering contingent of sidelined runners, including your humble scribe. The weather was not ideal, but at least dry, and spirits were high. Dave McClain, for one, ran a 5k PR. Almost 1000 runners took part in the race which started at the Asgard Restaurant and proceeded up Mass. Ave. to Harvard Sq, rounding the bend near Mr. Bartleys famous Burger Cottage with it's attendant burgaroma, and back to Asgard. The sun broke just in time to add some warmth to the beer-drinking festivities at the finish. But the CRC runners moved rather quickly to the Miracle for some post-race eats ....... and drinks.
Congrats to all who ran. I apologize if I failed to pick someone up in the results below and for my unawareness of other personal achievements that undoubtedly took place. Click the link for race pics including the proof of Jay and Meredith's heroism.
