Stu's 30km
Clinton, MA
March 1, 2009
Eight courageous CRC'ers made (perhaps) the first official CRC trip to Stu's 30km, a tradition Boston warmup race as indiciated by this year having the distinction of being the 30th running. There was some concern prior to the race about the impact a snow storm would have on the race especially since the previous race James organized was cancelled due to a snow storm! However, the weather held off enough for the race to go ahead and most important the snow was light enough that footing was not afected. The temperature was in the high 20s and a steady 6-10 mph wind seemed to follow runners around the course, a hilly loop around Wachusett Reservoir.
Hank challenge the leaders for a while but then took the opportunity to run like a mere mortal but still well enough to place sixth overall and second in his age group, walking away with a Central Mass Striders sweettop (no changing affiliation Hank!). James managed to miss all of the mile markers, which supposedly were hanging from trees, so for the most part had no idea of his pace or how far there was to run but nonetheless was very happy with his result. Tracy had planned to run at marathon pace and was almost right on target, placing full blame for the discrepancy on the last two hills. Kimberly was pleased with her effort and is already talking about returning for next years race (see note below from race organizer). David and Ting confessed to feeling a bit lethargic, which is not surprising since they both ran the 10 mile race the previous weekend and in Ting's case he has run three weeks in a row. Jen was pleased with her race despite the last two hills but didn't have much time to dwell on it as her Ph.D. defence was the next day. Good luck Jenn!! Due to a recent illness, Mark decided not to run the full distance. But he reported the he kept to his splits for the 14 miles that he ran and should now be in Florida enjoying running in warm weather.
Note for next year: The race organizer, Evelyn Dolan, was thrilled that CRC put up such a strong showing and had the following to say about our potential participation in next years race "I will be the race director again next year - contact me in December - maybe we can try to give you some discounts depending on how many runners you can bring."
