The 35th Annual Great Stew Chase 15km
Lynn, MA
Sunday February 1, 2009
David Loutzenheiser, James O'Malley, and Anne and Brian London took advantage of one of the few nice winter days this year to run in the legendary Great Stew Chase. Despite the absence of Henry Scollard, one of the strongest advocates of the race and the stew that follows, the organizers and entrants retained their usual spirit. This is a classic no-frills New England running race with minimal entry fee ($12), minimal water stops (2), a bit of mongrel on the course, and funky prizes for the fastest or lucky few.
David and James were happy with their results although both admitted to feeling "a bit lethargic", which they attributed to their advanced age. After the race David demonstrated his multisport repertoire by going hiking with his girlfriend while James caught up with former CRC members, Bruce Davie and Christy Bonstelle, and then hunkered back to Boston.
At track the following Thursday Anne reported on three incidents that occured during the race: a women was seriously injured when she went through the window of a car that burst through the police barricade at the turnaround point and onto the course, two middle-aged men in their 50s ended up in a fist-fight after one cut the other off, and a man ran the race barefooted! This was a Great Stew Chase to remember for good, bad and intriging reasons!
